MORNING SURF UP-DATE **** Good morning surfers and welcome to the machine. The Bali surf and weather report machine that is. Padang Padang that’s what it was yesterday. Like I said I made it down there around 3.00pm as the tide was starting to pour off the reef. Wave height was without a word of lie, pushing the 2-3 storey mark (2nd to 3rd floor up). In fact some of the bigger sets were closing out the channel across to Impossible’s. There woulda only been around 30-40 surfers braving it, and the local boys were totally leading the way. Stand out tube rider in my mind was Rizal Tanjung . I was on the scene up until 5.15pm and ended up taking home 25 minutes worth of 3CCD Video that I shot with our Cannon XL2 and as soon as I get through typing…. this up, I’m gunna start cutting some clips for ya’s to check out. (for free !!) Ok back to the present. Well when I went down for the 6.30am surf check of the Outer Reefs here in Tuban this morning the beach looked like a scene from a nuclear bomb . The tide was just coming off the bottom of the Low and the shoreline had been devastated by yesterday’s High tide. There were smashed sea walls and fallen coconut palms, not to mention all the pieces of smashed fishing boats. There was a lotta damage to most coastlines that face into the Indian Ocean through out all of Indonesia . Jimburan Bay had some the beach front cafes dragged into the sea. There were small waves rolling into the Poppies Lane 1 & 2 , a real nightmare for any beach front property owner. Today is gunna be round two. Wave height was still pushing 6-8ft+ on the Outer Reefs and when the Tide hits the top of the expected 2.6mtr High around midday it’s gunna get crazy again. There were a couple of surfers on Kuta Reef when I was down there but it didn’t look worth the effort. The wind was coming lightly outta the South @ 1-3 knot and on-shore but should swing back to the ESE at some stage of the day. The charts are saying that wave height should start backing off this afternoon and get back to some normality. Weather wise it’s all looking good with plenty of blue sky and expecting a top temperature of around 33 degree’s Celcius. Ok that’ll do us for now but tune in through out the day for the NEW VIDEO CLIPS from PADANG PADANG , plus I’ll give ya’s another run down of conditions later this afternoon. Here’s a money saving tip for ya’s; I picked up two new guests from the airport last night that were totally stoked to be here in surfers paradise. But when they told me they booked a surf charter (3 island Lembongan, Lombok and Sumbawa , standard) on-line and only paid US$960.00 each for the 7 day trip I nearly crashed the car. Ripped off, is what they got. So if you’re a first timer to Indo please be careful. Have a good one and I’ll be back L8R.
Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa; Dewa Made has sms’d through from Lakey Peak and says that wave height is still way to big over there with none of the better known locations handling the XL size. But he says that there are waves at the little know break called Jalla Pt. The total number of visiting surfers at lakey’s has dwindled down to 50. So don’t worry about the need to have advanced bookings at this stage because really that’s not a lot of guests when ya know there are at least 6-8 hotels to choose from. Also just another reminder for anyone want ing to try out Lakey Peak make sure you check the tidal information before you head over there. It’s pretty important that you line up your time there while the High Tide is happening through the early am and then progressing forward each day. That way you’ll be assured of scoring perfection. Merpati Airlines are flying there daily from Bali and you can buy your tickets from a 1000 different travel agents anywhere in Bali (and save yourselves some dollars by doing it on your pat malone) Once your in Bima there’s transport drivers waiting to take you to Lakey Peak for around Rp500,000 per van, and that’s split between the surfers. Then ya got a range of Hotels to choose from all right in front of the waves, ranging from low low budget to the very very comfortable rooms of the Aman Gati Hotel. Plus ya can always drop us an email for more information on getting across to lakey’s.
