Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands: September 2nd surf report The wind was not quite as strong this morning. It was still out of the south though so we sent our first boat to Beng Beng for those of our guests that wanted a fun, playful wave, and we sent the second boat to Hideaways for the guys that wanted waves with a bit more push. The swell was a little smaller than yesterday, but everyone was having fun. The wind got more and more calm, then turned north and got stronger and stronger from that direction. Both our boats pulled anchor and headed for Nipusi, arriving at nearly the same time. Some of the guys went out to try and get some of the double overhead sets that were coming in, but the winds kept getting stronger, then the rain started coming down so we hightailed it back to the resort. In the afternoon the rain backed down and the winds subsided some and turned northwest. Some of the guests surfed overhead 4 Bobs and head high Karambat Left, while the rest headed to Rifles to give it a look. It was a little weird out there. It was a few feet overhead and the winds were offshore, but there were some big lumps coming in from the north that were making things interesting. It was like peaks coming at you that distorted the barrel and made you work if you were going to come out. Weird Rifles, but better than no Rifles! It was a treat for everyone because the forecasts were all calling for southeast winds today and we had pretty much wrote off going right anywhere, especially Rifles. I guess you never know around here. We are hoping for good Rifles conditions tomorrow as a nice south swell is forecast to start hitting then.
