June 24, 2013 – On Saturday a group of underprivileged youth from 10-15 years old enjoyed surfing with Rip Curl international team riders Mick Fanning and Gabriel Medina and Rip Curl Asia team riders Garut Widiarta and Oney Anwar. With this event, Soul Surf Project Bali and Rip Curl Asia kicked off joining forces in an exclusive sponsorship for one year.
“It’s great to get involved with the local community and do things like this during the lay days when we’re at a WCT event,” said Mick Fanning, who is in Bali for the WCT contest at Keramas. “Being able to take underprivileged kids surfing for the first time was an amazing experience and hopefully it’s something they will remember for a long time and empower them to continue surfing.”
After the surfing lesson, the Rip Curl surfer, joined by legendary surfboard shaper Darren Handley visited the Rip Curl Memorial store on Jalan Legian, where they signed autographs and posed for photos with fans. Handley also put on a public surfboard shaping demo at the shop’s in-store shaping bay.
Rip Curl Soul Surf Project Bali provides programs for children in orphanages and shelters and street children on the island of Bali. Rip Curl Soul Surf Project Bali has found a way to protect the environment and to help underprivileged kids in Bali at the same time. The kids learn lessons about the environment like beach clean ups, recycling and turtle releases. Kids also learn how to surf, an activity that puts a big smile on their faces. With this unique combination, Soul Surf Project Bali found a way to tackle the problem at its roots!
While surfing, the kids are in the elements of Mother Nature. This will raise awareness of the importance of a clean environment. The kids are provided with surf lessons, which are giving the kids the possibility to develop themselves in the world of surfing. Talented kids will have the opportunity to shine in the sport of surfing or get trained to work in the Balinese surf industry by, for example, teaching tourists how to surf or work in marketing, designing or in sales. Rip Curl Soul Surf Project Bali is surfing for a better future!
