BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
9th -10th April 2020
Hello surfers (KEEP READING BELOW) and lovers of Bali and thanks again for stopping by the baliwaves (Bringing you all the good things from Bali since back in 1999) for our latest news and best possible views on surfing and weather conditions here on the island of the Gods, and the No.1 tropical surfing holiday destination and gateway to Indonesia’s surfing paradise, Bali.
Alright here’s another dig into our archives and this time it’s a good day of barrels down at Indonesia’s Premier location of Uluwatu. The date says August 4th 2010. I’m just trying to keep some routine and order going through these old files. It looks like we will be in the year 2010 for a bit longer yet before we go back further in time.
But I think most of our viewers will recognize a few of the surfers in today’s gallery. Feel free to comment and let us all know right.
I can remember the first time I surfed Uluwatu vividly. My best friend his wife and a couple of other lads with us parked the little Suzuki near the Temple and geared up ready for the walk in. My Bro said “it’s not far, only around 20mins or so” He and his wife had already been to Bali maybe 20 times. After about 30 mins or so of walking up and down gullies full of volcanic rock extrusions. Not too mention every tree or shrub was loaded with thorns grabbing out at you.
That’s when I stubbed my big toe on a piece of volcanic rock and tore the bottom layer of skin off the toe. The dirt and dust quickly caked over the wound and slowed the bleeding down to a trickle. Maybe another 15 minutes later my sweaty, blood and dirt covered “Dunlop double pluggers” broke and now I only had one “thong”. We trudged on, full of stoke and anticipation of surfing the famous Uluwatu. Another 20 minutes later I got my first view of the Indian Ocean and 3-5 footers cranking through the Main Peak.
We set up camp in Surya Warung, I still hang out there when I’m at Uluwatu these days. There was one other guy sitting in the Warung and he was putting some electrical tape over a ding on his board. I hit him up for some tape to hold my big toe together and after a lot of “come on man” from me he begrudgingly game in and let me use “2 wraps only couz” he was a Kiwi.
Right I was out there, so we climbed down the cliff, having our boards passed down into the “cave”. Straight out to the Peak as the tide was running in fast for a big Full Moon high tide. I surfed till my toe hurt and feeling the sun burn. I still remember the first back hand barrel I pulled into and holding my 6’0″ McCabe with my hand and steering her up and done to negotiate the heaving.
I also clearly remember heading back to “The Cave” and getting pulled straight past it by the raging current I wasn’t told about or even figured out for myself. But I made the early call to turn around and go back out for another attempt. I made it easily the second time around. Back in the warung it was all smiles and stoke to be in such an awesome place.
Nb; that wasn’t my first injury on this trip. I also got raked across the reef and tiger claws on my back. Plus I knocked out a “set fin” on my 7’4″ McCabe and when I surfaced after feeling a whack on my foot. My fin was sticking out of my foot (Balangan, but that’s another story). I didn’t get to surf again this trip with still 4 days left. I ended up hooking up with the Kuta Reef local boys at “Nirwana” and they took me out for my first ever serious sport fishing sessions in traditional boats and that’s how I become a fisherman in Bali (another story or 50 right there)
Weather wise here in Bali today it’s been another beautiful day here in South Kuta. Earlier this morning the wind was light out of the West. Now at 1.15pm the ESE Trade Wind has kicked in and hitting gusts up to 8-10knot. The temperature is a warm 31 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is at 82%.
Our swell forecast is saying that wave height has dropped off a bit today but should bounce back with a smaller swell that will keep delivering fun sized waves until around the 13th. It looks like the Ments and maybe G-Land will be lighting up with more size before the 13th.
Ok friends stay safe and keep your heads down, if you want to get through it then for now where ever you are just stay at home. Keep an eye on the baliwaves.com and we will do our best to keep all you Bali people up to date.
