BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
8th May 2020
Firstly we do know from first hand experience how tough it is here in Bali with absolutely no support other than friends and family. We would also like to offer a free promotional service to any other small outfits / businesses that are surf related here in Indonesia and Australia. So in turn we have told all our sponsors that we will be waving any fee’s until things are getting back to normal again.
Please contact us to see if your eligible for free promotion on baliwaves. We are surfers doing this for our fellow surfers and will hopefully continuing to do our thing for many years to come.
Well I tell ya it’s hard to get a surf report happening when all the beaches have been off limits, with the exception of some local surfers being allowed to surf at their local breaks. But for most of us older family type guys it’s been “Stay at Home” as requested by our leaders. Normally I’m a surf or die surfer but after almost 50 years surfing I think I’ve clocked up more waves than most of the new wave surfer generation have had hot meals. So I can hang out a little longer, it will be worth it.
But that doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy going back through some old hard disks to dig out some surfing memories of days gone by. So our latest photo gallery features a few waves of Balangan beach lining up nicely and a few nice views, that is standard at Balangan. I have heard recently that even though the Balangan has been closed off to the public for some time now there were still plenty of people jumping barricades, local and westerners. It got to the stage were the authorities had to station a team in the area to enforce the lock down.
Like last month before this one there is talk of Bali’s beaches being re opened to the public again soon. The decisions to open and close have been made each month and we are due for another pending decision around the 29th of May. In my opinion I don’t see any reason not to as the number of COVID 19 Bali Corona Virus cases here seem to be minimal with a higher than 50% full recovery rate at the moment. Things seem to be going well.
I do know here in Tuban and up through Kuta and Legian everyone is doing the right thing and staying home, just about everything no essential is closed. But out on the highway and Sunset road area it seems to be almost business as usual, especially in the Kerobokan to Berawa area there is plenty of people traffic. I had to go to Echo beach this morning and Echo beach was like a ghost town. But back towards Batu Bolong and Berawa there were people everywhere. But we will soon see, fingers crossed our surfing sanity will be saved.
Weather wise here in Bali it’s been just perfect Dry Season material. Hot and sunny days with the off cloud drifting through. Strong off shore ESE wind that usually kicks in by 9.30am.
On our Swell / Forecasting side of things from all accounts it’s been cranking. Especially over on the East Coast with the Cucukan area been the hot spot for the local boys. On the forecast side it looks like the tempo is going to be picking up again with an new system checking into Bali tomorrow. Then nothing but back to back swells with plenty of size coming in over the next couple of week. The first kicking in around the 13th – 14th of May.
I’ve also had a dig into our Video Archives and found some un seen before avi footage from the 2007 RipCurl Cup at Padang Padang. So I’ve painstakingly edited up around 6 and half minutes into something you should enjoy. It was early days for “The Cup” and RipCurl put on a good show in epic Padang Padang waves. You might recognize a few surfers, so check it out.
Lastly I wanna bring to the attention of any Aussie surfers that live around the beautiful Boomerang beach area of mid NSW. Our friend Chappy who is an Indo vet (among other things) and an all round good guy and Master Chef when it comes to Indonesian cuisine. Has a delivery or pick up service available in the area. So if your missing your Indo tucker give Chappy a call and see for yourself just how good a cook he is. The last two photos has a short menu and contact details for the man.
Special thanks dept goes out to the handful of friends that have kicked in some dollars to help my family and I to keep some food on the table and the lights on. I can’t thank you all enough. Please spare a thought for all our Balinese / Indonesian friends here in Bali, no tourism means no income and it’s been dead quite now since January..
Our Surf Fit Guru Mr Clive Rodell has also put together an essential Fitnes Manual that breaks down into layman terms how to keep your body in tip top condition that will keep you surfing well into retirement. He also goes in depth into how to manage and fix all those niggling injury that tend to accumulate. So check it out and ask Clive for more information and how to get your hands on it.
