BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
13th – 17th July 2020
Firstly, Special thanks to our good friends that have kicked in some dollars to help my family and I keep food on our table, lights on and baliwaves.com being able to help keep you in the loop. We do know from first hand experience how tough it is here in Bali with absolutely no support other than friends and family. We would also like to offer a free promotional service to any other small outfits / businesses that are surf related here in Indonesia and Australia.
So in turn we have told all our sponsors that we will be waving any fee’s until things are getting back to normal again. Please contact us to see if your eligible for free promotion on baliwaves.
Hello everyone and heck where did those last 4 days go ! It’s weird but being out of work, no guests, money and everything else that goes with the pandemic I’m finding that time is rocketing forward at a scary pace. Dividing my time between my Family / kids / garden / dogs / fixing servicing everything / fixing my boats that I hardly have time to scratch myself, weird hey.
I did take a run down to Uluwatu on the 15th but was skunked. I had dragged my old camera gear along with me hoping there would be a few of the young guns out charging, but alas there were none. In fact there was only one surfer in the water and he was sitting that far away from where the waves were actually breaking it looked like he might have been out there fishing. But I wasn’t that stressed out, I’ve learned to manage stress a lot better the last 7 months. Kind of learn to live with it, if it’s out of my control why stress out right. I did get to run into an old friend of mine with his wife and 1 of his 4 kids. Plus I could park my car right down the bottom in the “old car park” seeing as though it was empty. So less chance of having a heart attack lugging the 30+kg’s of camera equipment up the hill.
Yesterday the 16th I was back down the beach here in South Kuta to start the last phase of repair on my fishing boat (traditional). Paint and fit the 8mtr bamboos on the outrigger arms (cedik). Almost there and ready to fish, my stress levels will be totally reset to zero once I am back out there on the ocean doing one of the things I love to do. Wave height on the Outer Reefs had dropped off quite a bit, but still a respectable size between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. Head to double head high was my call and looking nice pretty straight and clean, except.. for the strong off shore wind that was into it. Yeah, Indonesia’s Trade wind has been doing her best to fly a million kites 27 / 7 the last few weeks. Blowing hard off shore here on Bali’s West coast between Uluwatu and Kuta beach. While doing the exact opposite over on the East Coast.
Today the 17th and this morning wave height has jacked back up again, head to triple head high plus waves breaking between Kuta Reef and Airport left. Kuta Reef was the only viable (semi) out there early but it was just about maxing out and some was through sets that don’t wrap around the reef peeling off. I will take another surf check this afternoon as the “charts” are calling for bigger and better waves to show up over the next 24 hours.
Weather wise It’s been a mostly clear and sunny day with a few clouds on the drift. The Tradey was a bit sleepy this morning and only just kicking in towards middy. I’d say there might have been a few nice waves over on the East Coast early as well. Temperature wise right now at 12.30pm it is a warm 28 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is at 72%.
On the Bali Corona Virus situation, in my eye’s I’m seeing a lot of local people just trying to get on with their lives, survive. Anyone in the tourist industry is doing it the toughest that’s for certain. Small local warungs and most markets are still kicking along as we all have to eat, and right now putting food on the table is priority No.1 for us all. The next big issue is paying bills and for those with illness buying medicines etc. So out on the highway there has been a big increase in traffic, but the tourist routes of Tuban, Kuta, Legian are all still just about empty and if they were not coble stone paved would be good for riding skateys or a game of cricket, maybe.
The last 24 hours here in Bali there has been 112 new cases of the virus reports (officially). 106 new recovered patients and 3 more deaths taking Bali’s toll to 32. Nationally Indonesia recorded 1,574 new infections taking the total number of Corona Virus cases to 81,668. That puts Indonesia just a few thousand under China’s total number and steadily climbing with the highest infection zones being in East Java and Jakarta regions. Indonesia has also had a total of 3,873 fatalities cause by the Corona virus to date.
For more information on Bali’s situation go to the @BaliCOVID-19 page on facebook administered by Jackie Pomeroy
I also copied this off @TheLombokGuide facebooks page that provides information on the islands of Lombok and Sumbawa
“The total cumulative Covid-19 cases in NTB is now 1,648, with 1,448 from Lombok and 152 from Sumbawa (+ 43 from other areas + 5 foreigners).
With 1,054 recoveries and 85 official deaths, the total number of positive cases in NTB is currently 509. The majority of these people are in isolation wards in local hospitals.
“With many hospitals now over capacity and people dying almost every day, the NTB government urges the community to cooperate in preventing the spread of the virus: wear a mask when outside the home, avoid crowds, keep physical distance of 2 metres from each other, and wash hands frequently with soap and running water, or hand sanitiser” – Covid-19 Task Force.
The Task Force, together with police and armed forces, are carrying out education and safety checks in the community, however obstacles to enforcing Covid-19 prevention protocols include the lack of discipline in the community and the lack of sanctions for those who do not comply with the rules. Until now, authorities could only appeal to the public for cooperation”
The failure to follow the one preventative measure like simply wearing a face mask when outside the home also seems to be a problem here in Bali as well. I did read that the President of Indonesia is preparing an order that will make it mandatory to wear a mask outside of the home area with penalties for those that fail to do so. I think that will be the only way to see everyone on the same page and help cut transmissions at least.
As of the 13th of July the Immigration Dept has declared all emergency visas now cancelled, so any visitor that was here on the “emergency stay visa” has been given 30 days to leave Indonesia. That’s of course if there are flights back to their country of origin. I do believe that there are 1000’s of people in this group so Bali is going to get a lot more quite over the next month, if that is even possible.
Ok Bali people thanks for dropping by the baliwaves and stay tuned right here to the original Bali surf report website for more news and views as we get them. I will be heading back out with the camera equipment tomorrow and hopefully there will be a few chargers out there chasing that old well known and felt adrenaline rush.

G’day Slim, been pumping here on the East Coast too! Actually got Snapper thru to Greenmount @ 4 ft(sets) relatively uncrowded! Anyways hope you & your family aren’t doing it to tough & are remaining healthy. Mate I hear that the govt are planning to reopen Bali in early Sept.Is this correct & if so how will it operate as I don’t think there are any international flights, except for essential workers.
Thanks Jim !!!!
