BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
20th – 22nd August 2020
Firstly, Special thanks to our good friends that have kicked in some dollars to help my family and I keep food on our table, lights on and baliwaves.com being able to help keep you in the loop. We do know from first hand experience how tough it is here in Bali with absolutely no support other than friends and family. So please take a look at the baliwaves support page up above this report and any help you can pass onto will be highly appreciated for a long time to come. Thanks again to everyone who has helped out and stay tuned as I will get some kind of a raffle and prize draw happening soon.
Hello everyone and Thanks again to the friends who have managed to spare a few dollars to help us out here in Bali. Your kindness and actions are helping us to keep the lights and internet on, food on the table and even some petrol in the fuel tanks to keep baliwaves running. We can’t thank you enough and I will find some way to thank you all as we still have quite a few miles to go.
I may have mentioned over the last month or two how I have been working on getting my old traditional double and single outrigger boats back up to being sea worthy. Well the boats are ready to go and with the help of my fishing and beach buddies here in Tuban we have also managed to build from mostly scrounged materials a 250kg cement mooring block. On the 20th with lots of man power and muscle we managed to wrestle my mooring the 100mtrs down the beach and get it dragged out in place for me to tie off on. It was hard work but in true Balinese fashion it was done with a lot of jokes and laughter. Still need to let it settle in the sand a few more days, I’m so looking forward to using it soooon.
Yesterday the 21st I spent most of the morning sending emails that were a little overdue. Before grabbing my rods and gear and heading out for an afternoon fish hunt with a good friend in his boat. The wind was pretty strong so it was a bit rough up between Tanahlot and Canggu around 2 km’s off the coast. But there some big schools busting up on the surface and everything was looking good. Then unexpectedly as most bad stuff happens the throttle / control cable on the Nyoman’s outboard snapped, leaving us almost dead in the water. It did end our chances of chasing the schools but we could still manually use the throttle control on the engine itself and limp back home into the howling wind. Instant noodle’s for dinner again haha.
Today the 22nd and as it shows in our latest photo gallery there were some nice waves about (as always). I was thinking of you and getting your Bali fix to you so. With the wind light and variable early this morning and smallish swell showing on the Outer Reefs here in Tuban I thought some of the better waves and surfers might be found up at Canggu. It wasn’t a bad call. On arrival at 8.00am wave height was hitting the SandBar in the chest to well over head high class with a light off shore wind. The tide was around the mid mark on the run in for a 2.5mtr High. Only half a dozen surfers in the water when I first started shooting photos with the local boys well and truly standing out.
There was also starting to get a few waves standing up on the Pererenan river mouth rights. But before too long around 50-70 grommets from the Tippi Jabrik Gromfest camp all converged and Canggu and it went from quiet and laid back into a sprawling ants nest of activity. It looked to me like the groms were all frothing as groms tend to do. The SE Tradewind also picked this time to start to kick in so I think the serious surfers had all had their fill by that time and there were still plenty of waves left for the grommets to have a contest.
Weather wise today it’s been a nice and sunny Saturday here on the holiday island of Bali. Right now at 2.45pm the temperature is still a warm 29 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is at 74%. Wind direction is coming hard out of the SE at 20km/h plus.
Tomorrows Surf Forecast is calling maybe just a slight bump in size from today coming out of the same direction. The wind is also expected to be a little lighter earlier in the morning before the Trade wind kicks in. The tide will be fairly low around sun rise and a strong full tide around midday.
Ok friends thanks again for dropping by the baliwaves and thank you again for all your support through this unprecedented pandemic situation we are battling through.
