BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
27th January 2021
Hello Bali people and thanks for tuning into the baliwaves, the original Bali surf report website since back in 1999. We really hope your 2021 is already an improvement on last year and that our situation can only improve through the year. Here in Bali our situation has only declined while the graphics for the virus casualties only keeps pointing up wards and apparently out of control. It does seem that our chances of seeing tourism return to Bali all hangs on the outcome of the vaccination program that will slowly start to get under way in the next week or so. But in reality will take many more months of suffering before we see any results.
All we can do in the mean time.. is try to avoid crowds, wear our masks and wash our hands. We really thank each and everyone of you have helped Bali in one way or another and I’m sure Bali will not forget you. You really are Bali people. That goes to all our friends that have helped my family through 2020, the people that really know us and our situation. I don’t where we would be without your kindness, I just hope we can see this out a little longer, if you could spare a dollar we will be forever grateful.
Well not a lot has changed on the surfing scene here in Bali over the last few days. Mostly small waves on both sides of the island coupled with a mostly very ordinary Westerly wind. Here on the Outer reefs of South Kuta wave height has been ok in the waist to head high class but that Westerly wind has not been doing us any favors. Likewise everywhere else on the West Coast, but with slightly bigger waves at some locations.
This morning wave height between Kuta Reef and Airport left has bumped a little, or maybe it’s the shorter wave period making it look that way. But appeared to be in the 2-3ft+ class. The wind was up early this morning blowing hard out of the West up to 15knot.
Over on the East Coast I’ve had reports in from Keramas calling small waves with cross / off shore wind. Solid crowds at Nusa Dua and Pandawa with similar cross / off shore wind hitting it. So surfwise 2021 hasn’t got off to a good start I reckon. Especially if you add the amount of rain we have had. But that’s how The Wet Season goes right. Some wet seasons are worse that others and I have to say that so far this is one of the dampest “wets” I’ve experienced out of the 26 I’ve experienced.
Weather wise this morning the overnight rain carried into this morning, but now at 11.11am I’m seeing some lovely patches of blue sky and I hope it hangs around.. It is predicted to be pretty much rain free for tomorrow and then a return to the wet through the rest of the week. Temperature wise we have 28 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is at 83%. Wind is a strong Westerly with gusts up to 18knot.
I thought I’d take another dig into our huge amount of archived photos and cheer everyone up with some smoking waves at Bali’s premier surfing location of Uluwatu. This group of photos is the first installment from the Quiksliver Uluwatu Challenge of August 2015. Some of the local boys were invited into the event that featured a large x=cast of International professionals in the mix. Uluwatu really turned it on and delivered it’s Main Peak perfection and deep deep tube rides. Ketut and I were shooting from our favorite warung “Surya” and in fact I’m pretty sure I’ve got the video footage here somewhere as well. These photos were taken through our 1000mm fixed lens. Hat’s off Uluwatu Boardriders club, the boys really do know how to host a surf contest.
On the Bali Sport Fishing scene the wind and rain has really put a halt on us. Not too mention that at this time of the year the weather really can go from fair to dangerous in just a 10 minute window. My boat is up on the beach and the outriggers dismantled, time to see out the rest of the wet season. I’ve been lucky at times and learned that it’s not worth risking life or limb for a fish or two. Even in these thoroughly hard times that we are experiencing here on the Island of the Gods.
On the Bali Corona Virus scene Today Indonesia exceeds over 1,000,000 positive cases of Covid-19. The national death toll is over 28,000. Here in Bali we had another record number of positive cases again yesterday with 542 new positive cases. With the vaccine roll out still having a long way to go and no real lock down in effect things may get a lot worse in the coming days, weeks and months. Already many hospitals in Java have reached maximum capacity, Bali is not far off that mark as well, so it could be time for a hard lockdown here for a couple of weeks trial,
