BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
15th February 2021
Thanks again for dropping into the baliwaves (the original Bali surf report website since back in 1999. We really are saddened that we can’t keep the on location daily report happening through these extremely hard times here in Bali, but we are doing our best. Sure, there are waves out there just about everyday of the year, somewhere in Bali is always pumping out waves. But the problems are that firstly there is a pandemic happening and Bali has not been exempt from the sickness and deaths that goes with that kind of stuff. Then there’s been really bad weather and when you couple that up with having to buy petrol to find those good waves. Time is one thing we do have, but cash to burn on petrol we don’t I’m sorry. Keeping my family feed and the bills paid have been our No.1 priority, just like most average families here in Bali.
Times are very hard with no income for almost 1 year now.. If you could spare a dollar or two to help us out please hit up our PayPal link or drop us an email, thanks again. A big Thank You to our friends and supporters that helped us survive through 2020 !!!
Hey everyone time for another Bali fix while we are still waiting for you all to make it back here. Well the last few days the surf has been pretty ordinary for our high Bali standards so I haven’t bothered wasting our very precious petrol chasing waves. But you may have noticed a new video clip I put together for baliwaves a few days ago. The clip features Keramas on a pretty much perfect day back around the middle of this pandemic. Bali when the streets of Bali were deserted and most people living in fear on the unknow invisible virus threat. There were only around 6 – 8 surfers in the water if I remember correctly. So if you haven’t already checked it you had better get on it asap.
Today the 15th and wave height is still only down around the waist to head high range, maybe a little bigger down at Uluwatu and up at Balian. Today the wind has only been fairly light out of the W-WSW in the 3-7knot range. Not a lot happening between Kuta Reef and Airport Left but I guess if you had nothing else to do you could always go out for a paddle. For that matter you might have even found a little beach break up along the Kuta to Legian stretch of beach.
Weather wise it’s been mostly overcast with some bursts of random sun shine. No over night rain last night so fingers crossed we have passed through the worst of this wet season. Right now at 2,45pm the temperature is still a warm 30 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is at 75%. The wind is currently West at 50-8knot.
Surf Forecast predictions are running a little behind earlier predictions but we should still see some new swell starting to show in the next 24-36hrs. Then another bump around the 9th. Then if the long range outlooks stays true we should get a solid swell hitting Bali on or close to the 22nd of Feb.
Today’s photo gallery goes back to laid back days and some perfect waves at our old favorite Serangan. Usually around this time of the year we would be scoring some nice waves, nasi gorengs and some lazy after surf massages. That just about sums up the Serangan beach lifestyle I reckon. We have had so many empty dawn sessions there and it didn’t matter if the tide was high or low. The only deal on the low tide was watching out for all the long spiny sea urchins scattered across the rock and reef sea floor.
Serangan was a once pretty much forgotten location until the surf school boom days that made a lot of money for a select few but screwed thousnads of surfs for your average surfer. Some of the hard core Serangan locals used to voice their thoughts out in the water and give the foreign owned surf schools a hurry up to go in. I don’t have a problem with people learning to surf at all but there is a place for learners and it’s not out in the line up with your experienced surfers. I’m sure you would agree.
The waves at Serangan had many faces and many options available on most days. From fun 1-3ft days that were indeed best suited to the grommets and learners to 2-4 times over head and perfect. With all shapes and sizes in between. The low tide produces some tubey right handers with less learners in the line up while the high tide used to favor the lefts. The bottom is a mostly flattish lava rock with scattered reef starting to grow. Lots of little pot holes full of spinney sea urchins. The beach has a pure white sand that is now off limits to the public.
The island of Serangan was sold to foreign investors and gates installed and security employed to keep locals and visitors out. The beach lifestyle, family picnics at Serangan are all a think of the past, just a memory. For surfers there is still boat only access to the waves but at the end of the day it makes for a lot of extra costs just to get there. Anyway I hope some of these photo bring back some nice memories of Serangan beach.
On the Bali Corona Virus situation it’s pretty hard to actually know what’s going on as we are not getting any detailed information, especially when it comes to Bali. National numbers have dropped off and that’s great news but if we look at the number of testing that’s being done that has also dropped off, Sounds about right. With the testing that it is being done the national positivity rate is still over 25%, so that would make 1 in 4 tests performed returning positive result to the virus. Still no news on when where or how the public vaccination roll out will begin or for when ex pats will get access to buy a vaccination. So I don’t think we will see the International airport re open until the vaccinations start rolling out in earnest.
