BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
6th – 7th May 2021
Hello Bali people and thanks for stopping by the baliwaves (the original Bali surf report website since 1999, for surfers by surfers)
I don’t know if most of you are still aware that Bali is really still hurting, most of Bali anyway. I guess you could say there are a couple of area’s around Canggu and down on the bukit that are cashing in from the European explosion. I also heard from a friend who took a trip up to Balian hoping to score a few waves through our flat spell. He couldn’t believe that there were so many surfers up at Balian as well. My family and I have a small guest house that mostly serves to Aussies and there hasn’t been any real Aussie visitors here on holiday since last Jan 2020. We are not alone of course, especially if any of you have watched the last video clip I posted with footage from Kuta and Legian. If not check out our baliwaves YouTube channel.
Last year there was lots of people organizing relief with financial and food package relief but that seems to have just about stopped. So if you know people here in Bali please drop them a line and check to see if they are ok. There are a lot of desperation and depression happening around the island. Likewise if any of our friends can spare a dollar or two to help my Family it would be greatly appreciated, thanks (please hit this link to help out).
On the 4th locally here in Tuban the Outer reefs did have a few waves breaking on all three of the main sections with some head to over head high sets hitting Middle Reef. I think I did post a video report on our Facebook pake that morning as Ray and I pushed our boat out through the channel to try and catch some fish. Just for the record we ended up grilling our left over “live bait” of pilchards for dinner.
On the 5th I was a bit stiff after spending most of the day out in the boat so just stayed at home in recovery mode and did the standard backyard stuff. But yesterday the 6th and my afternoon surf check on the Outer Reefs was still showing a little head high swell running. The tide was high at the time so Airport left was offering the best of it. But the surfers out in the water were also battling a strong 20knot straight off shore E-ESE wind.
Today’s photo gallery was shot down at Bingin and Impossibles from our friends at Swell Bali Hotel (Bingin) as it shows wave height was in the head to slightly over head range and plenty of surfers in the water. The line up at Impossible’s always looks so good and I never get tired of that view that goes all the way down the Racetrack at Uluwatu. But it is not a picture perfect wave and also similar to another bukit gem, Balangan. Fast and speedy waves with lots of sections all too often out running you. But, if your lucky and pick the right one then you can get jeliy legged from a long and memorable ride.
Today’s surf check on the Outer Reefs of Tuban was looking like and as predicted a slight drop in wave height. At 12.30pm the tide was heading for a 0.8mtr Low (2.19pm) so Middle Reef being the deepest of the 3 main sections was offering a chest to head high wave. Middle Reef usually always has an extra foot or two of size compared to Kuta Reef and Airport Left / Right.
Surfing conditions on the Outers was clean and tidy with the wind fairly straight out of the East at 7-10knot.
Weather wise today and the last few days for that matter have been hard to fault here along the West Coast. What most surfers dream of with blue sky, warm water and all day off shore wind. Temperature wise right now at 1.00pm the mercury is on 30 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is at 66%. Wind direction is currently E-ESE at 10knot.
Tomorrows Surf Forecast is calling for another slight dip in wave height through the morning then starting to bump a little with a better period of up to 15 seconds through out the afternoon. Light and variable wind early before the E-ESE Trade kicks mid morning.
Further out we will hopefully see another new swell hitting Bali and surrounding islands on the 9th and then more swell again on the 14th. Nothing huge on the long range radar just yet.
On the Bali Corona Virus Scene, as you might have heard on the International news there has been a few tragic cases of corruption gone down in Indonesia. With a certain Dr and assistants re using nasal swabs at a Sumatran airport. Then the Jakarta Hotel quarantine scandals. Not a good look and almost inhuman acts during a World wide pandemic. Still no news or confirmations on Denpasar International airport re opening in June / July at this stage. New strains of the virus have been detected in Bali, along with a big national holiday and lots of big ceremonies coming, time to keep the head down and strictly follow the protocols. The good news, Bali is pushing ahead with vaccinating the general population, maybe when we have achieved that goal things will start turning more positive.
