First up we have had confirmation on the shark attack up at Balian that happened the day after our last visit there. A young Russian surfer girl was bit on the foot by a small shark and she suffered some very nasty lacerations. She is currently recovering after her surgery here in Bali. Nb: This would be the 6th shark / surfer incident at this break over the last 7-8 years. There are a few factors that attract sharks to Balian with the very aggressive Bull shark being the most common and often seen jumping out of the water. Balian has quite a large river mouth that empties out right in front of the almost perfect A frame peak with a couple more waves lying adjacent to the main peak. Off memory every time there has been an attack at Balian it has always been after heavy rain. That in turns flows out through the river mouth turning the surf zone a dirty / chocolate brown color. These attacks are happening by mistaken identity, with the dirty water all the sharks are acting on are the vibrations they are feeling in the water. Not because they are targeting human flesh.
Our sympathy to the young surfer and we are very happy to hear she is recovering after her surgery here in Bali.
Yesterday the 31st of May with the morning promise of light and variable wind we made an early run over to the East Coast. Arriving to find some super clean and glassy waves in the chest to slightly over head high waves. It was also so good to have a clear blue sky on the photo side of things. Only 5 surfers in the line up at 7.00am, but as the tide and morning filled in it did get a busy. Have a flick through our latest photo gallery for a 1000mm view on Keramas yesterday.
Weather wise like I mention it was a 10/10 type day. Light off shore NNW wind fading to nothing then slowly bumping up out of the ESE-SSE while we were on the East Coast. Here on the West caost we had a WSW on shore breeze by midday.
Today the 1st of June and our morning started off with a howling 20knot+ onshore Westerly wind. It’s been mostly overcast with the threat of rain and still looking that way now at 12.45pm. Surf wise between Kuta Reef and Airport left there was only some 1-2ft wind driven mush. The wind has settled down some since early this morning but still currently a dull over cast sky. Wind is out of the West at 12knots. Temperature is on 29C with the Humidity at 75%.
The next tide today will be a 0.3mtr Low at 5.10pm
Tomorrows Surf Forecast is calling in a further drop in wave height with the direction still coming out of the SW. Wind wise is anyone’s call after this morning un predicted strength and direction.
Long Range Surf Forecast is not looking real good over the next 7 days but there is hope a little further outside that window. There is a small bump in wave height around the 7th and then a solid system in transit a couple of days behind coming out of the SW.
Ok thanks again and I have loaded a short video clip onto baliwaves Facebook page that I shot the day before the latest shark attack incident.
