Alright so on the 9th and 10th wave height was pretty small with a strong ESE-SE Trade wind howling from start to finish. Here in South Kuta the Outer Reefs were only just breaking with wave height in the 1-3ft range between Kuta reef and Airport left. Way to windy to even think about surfing the super exposed Airport Right.
My boy Ray and due to no guests thought we had better get out in the boat and try and catch some food for the family. There were some small schools of “Yellow Jacks” busting up out behind the Airport, but with the strong wind it was hard to get close to them before they would go back under. No luck for us and with around 8 other boats out there doing the same we only saw 1-2 boats hook up.
Yesterday the 11th Ketut and I took a run down to the Southern end of the island to Bali’s premier surfing location, Uluwatu. Working with the tide we pulled out of the driveway around 8.00am. Expecting to get caught in the “late for work” traffic, but it was surprisingly light for that time of the morning. Arriving at Ulu at 8.45am to find some nice sized waves in the 3-4ft+ range hitting the Main Peak and Temple sections. Some of you probably saw our video reports of the traffic and Uluwatu yesterday on face book.
The tide was running out and the Racetrack was also showing good potential for midday on the early afternoon low tide. But by 10.00am wave height seemed to be backing down and the crowd level pushing the tonne from the Track to Temples. Things were just getting too slow for us and by 11.15am Ketut and I were back in the van and on the way back for lunch at home. There were even rumors of the great Kelly Slater still here in Bali and surfing his favorite Temples yesterday.
Weather wise it was mostly overcast down on the bukit end of Bali and the rain just in front of us all the way. You can tell by the photos conditions were not your usual hot and sunny Bali weather. Speaking of, after almost 30 yrs of living full time in Bali I don’t think I have ever seen weather as wet and mixed up as what we have had and still having this year.
Today the 12th and my 8.00am morning surf check on the Outer reefs (sorry left my phone on the charger again). Wave height was only just in the 1-2ft+ and only just breaking between Kuta reef and Airport left. The tide was almost on the top of a big High and the wind strong and gusty out of the ESE.
The next tide today will be a 0.3mtr Low at 3.14pm We will also see a Full Moon rising here in Bali tomorrow the 13th and even bigger tidal ranges over the next few days.
Tomorrows Surf Forecast is actually calling for wave height to start bumping up a little through this afternoon and peaking through the night. We should see some nice fun sized waves around the island on a period of 15seconds. You can also expect more of this gusty ESE wind to go with it so look for the more protected locations.
We also hope you liked our latest Video Clip we have put together. Featuring some waves we filmed this month at Keramas, Uluwatu and Canggu.
Tourism up date. Ok well it has really been surreal in a way to see such a big rush of tourism back into Bali again. Especially after only 6 months ago we were in dire straights and depression. The last month it has been fully amplified by the national school holidays through out Indonesia. Which really put a huge amount of pressure on Bali’s roads causing traffic jams with all the visiting domestic tourists into Bali. I have been doing quite a few miles around Bali and it is so soothing to see an also big increase in westerners.
The beaches around Kuta have been crowded with locals and westerners sprinkled through. But while the roads in Kuta and Legian have a lot of traffic in cars and bikes there are still very few foot pedestrians. About 80% of the businesses are open and 20% still have their roller doors down and “for rent” signs up. I feel that the Kuta area and directly to the North and South still have a long way to go for a “back in the black” economy.
What really blew me away was watching the State of Origin football with some friends that were in town at just how many Aussies could fit into 1 sports bar. Some popular bars and resto’s are making a killing with the current boom in tourism but poor old Kuta is still struggling. Time will tell and with schools starting to resume again at least the traffic problem should settle back down again. So book your tickets, Bali is still waiting for you and your friends to come and pitch in.
