BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
14th May 2020
Firstly we do know from first hand experience how tough it is here in Bali with absolutely no support other than friends and family. We would also like to offer a free promotional service to any other small outfits / businesses that are surf related here in Indonesia and Australia. So in turn we have told all our sponsors that we will be waving any fee’s until things are getting back to normal again. Please contact us to see if your eligible for free promotion on baliwaves. We are surfers doing this for our fellow surfers and will hopefully continuing to do our thing for many years to come.
Hello friends of Bali and time for another trip down memory gang (lane). The next archived folder on the list just happens to be from G-Land in the year 2011. There’s only 18 photos in this gallery but there are a few nice round barrels. Thanks to our friends at Joyo’s G-land Surf Camp for saending them through to us, I’m not sure who the photographer was at the time as they have come and go over the years.
I’ve got some great memories from being over in the jungle of Alas Purwo National Park. Fo those who have not yet made the trip to G-Land you really need to do yourself a favor. The Mentawai Islands might be cool and in fashion, but if you want long and perfect waves with power to spare G-Land has got to be ticked off your list of things to do. G-land a bit like Uluwatu is not one long wave but made up of different sections that work off different swell size, direction and tidal ranges.
I’ve been lucky to have been involved with all of the main camps in the Park over the years, starting with Bobby’s back in 90’s. Back in the day when there were some real characters, regulars that never missed a season. Mostly American’s living in Hawaii that only came to Indonesia for one reason and one reason alone, to surf G-Land and hang out in the Jungle. There was a lot more surfer comeradery back then, if you were a surfer you were a friend. I can’t remember all the people I met over at G-Land over the years with around 20 free trips under my belt. But people I will never forget are friends Gerald Saunder (RIP), Jim Cambell, CocaCola George, Puma and so many more genuinely good hearted surfers. Not too mention friendships with Bobby, Raymond and Laurenz the camp owners. I’m not sure what ever happened to Raymond since he sold his camp. Hopefully he’s still in Bali somewhere enjoying some cold bintangs that he loved so much. Yes sir I’ve had a lot of great times and some funny experiences in G-Land over the year.
Sorry but I have to mention just of funny ones ok.
I think it was my first trip into the Jungle staying at Bobby’s, I was working for Bobby at the time helping to run his MCD surf clothing production here in Bali. After a sick surf session at Money Tree’s I had had a big lunch and wanted to chill out in Bobby’s Cinema area and watch a VHS movie. The place was totally empty but could seat quite a few people if I remember correctly. I had lay down on 3-4 seats and was just starting to nod off. When I felt someone’s presence close by. Being half asleep I sat up and looked at some guy who had sat down maybe just 2 seats away from me. I shook my head at him and told him just quietly.. why didn’t he pick a different seat there were 30 or so others to choose from. But he just mumbled something back to me and stayed where he was and I went back to sleep. What seemed like 10 seconds later I woke to this guy screaming and jumping around. I asked him (politely hehe) what was going on and he said “a fucking snake fell from the ceiling and landed on my lap” Well it was just one of the many tin little tree snakes that are sometimes everywhere in The Jungle and I couldn’t help but almost shit myself from laughing. I might have even said, I told you to fkg sit somewhere else , didn’t I.
Over in G-Lands Jungle the scenery is spectacular and some stuff you won’t find anywhere else in the World. It always blows me away to see some of the animal and bird life you can find in the area. It really is just plain awesome to say the least.
When this Corona Virus clears you need to get to G-Land and experience it for yourselves. Joyo’s G-Land Surf Camp are offering a buy 3 days and get 4 days for free offer with open use by dates. So contact us first and score the deal of a lifetime for the trip of a lifetime. Once you go into The Jungle once you will return again.
Special thanks dept goes out to the handful of friends that have kicked in some dollars to help my family and I to keep some food on the table, lights on and baliwaves.com still keeping you in the loop. I can’t thank you all enough. Please spare a thought for all our Balinese / Indonesian friends here in Bali, no tourism means no income and it’s been dead quite now since January..
Our Surf Fit Guru Mr Clive Rodell has also put together an essential Fitnes manuel that breaks down into layman terms how to keep your body in tip top condition that will keep you surfing well into retirement. He also goes in depth into how to manage and fix all those niggling annoying injuries that we tend to accumulate. So check it out and ask Clive for more information and how to get your hands on it.
