BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
13th – 14th October 2020
A BIG hello to everyone tuning in, and a SPECIAL hello to our friends that really know us and have shown us the much needed support through this extremely tough mentally and physically time. We are into our 10th month of no income and I’m sure you would be able to work out how hard that would be. It is only through your help that we are keeping everything together keeping the lights on and food on the table. Thank You
We hope everyone is surviving the best they can, here at ground level in Bali it really is about survival for the average people. For my self it’s all about getting through one day at a time, and some days are definitely better than others. The pandemic is dragging on and the longer it goes the more damage to the average persons mental health is really being stretched. We have made it through 10 months of no Family income only through the kindness and consideration of our friends. A big deep heart felt thanks to everyone who has considered our well being here in Bali.
On the surf scene yesterday the 13th and just about everywhere on Bali’s West Coast was cranking. Here on the Outer Reefs wave height was a very respectable head to double head high between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. With the cleanest of sweet off shore E-SE wind fanning it. Kuta Reef was believe it or not a complete circus and comparable to pre Corona virus days with 40 plus surfers. Lots of new white skinned surfers turning up down at the beach, evidence that tourists are getting into Bali to surf. While Kuta Reef was maxing out with surfers down the other end of the D shaped reef Airport Left was pretty much going un noticed with only a handful of surfers and some nice 2-4 footers. I also talked to another “new guy” down the beach who had just come in from surfing 2nd Middles by himself. So it was sheeple day at Kuta Reef I guess.
Our good friends from the Swell Bali Hotel down at Bingin also sent through some nice photos from their backyard in the Bingin area last night. Like I said everywhere along the West side was cranking yesterday. Looking at these photos Bingin looked super perfect as usual and Impossible’s even had a few possible waves as well.
Hey if anyone else can send us through some surf reports and photos from around Bali we will also be happy to give your business some air time on the baliwaves in exchange during this low to no income pandemic we are feeling.
Today the 14th and my 7.00am surf check on the Outer Reefs of Tuban was looking exactly as it did yesterday afternoon. Wave height between Kuta Reef and Airport Left was a shapely head to double head high with a clean Easterly breeze on it. The tide was just about on the top at the time and again no shortage of surfers, and as I was leaving to come back home there were lots more arriving for another ground hog crowded Kuta reef session.
Weather wise out side this morning we have a mostly blue sky and it’s shaping up for another perfect day (weather wise) here on the Holiday Island of Bali. The temperature is already a warm 29 degree’s Celsius now at 8.40am, Summer is really kicking in here in the tropics. Humidity is not too bad at 76% and the wind is ESE-SE at 15km/h.
The next tide today will be a 0.3mtr Low at 2.16pm and the next moon phase is going to be a New Moon rising on the 16th so we will be seeing more of the reef on the low tides over the next few days.
Tomorrows Surf Forecast is saying we can expect to see wave height backing off a foot or two but we should still have some waves. The wind is also predicted to be light and variable so the East coast could be a good early morning option.
Now I’d just like to give you some of my experience from the last couple of days. It all started from entering a wrong pin code at an ATM, re enter and away I go again. At the time it was fine and I pulled the last of my cash and went back home, to find a text message from the CBA bank asking if it was in fact me who had just used the debit card. I had two options press yes or no on my phone and with the small screen I accidently hit the NO button.. Instant response was, “your card has been blocked, please call the CBA immediately”
Great, I really fkd up but this should be easy to fix, I’ll just give the overseas emergency number a call and explain. So I (sadly) loaded 20 dollars credit into my phone, no one uses phone credit these days right, it’s all Whats App or Messenger using internet data. So I make the call, “press 1 blah blah blah, press 2 blah blah blah and on and on and on and on. Until my call had been placed in the que to be answered by the first available operator blah blah blah. Well 15 minutes later my phone runs out of credit and I’m disconnected and 20 dollars lighter.
So I go back on the CBA website and search for links, ok there is a reverse charge number, fantastic ! But it must be made from a “land line” Now once upon a time there were public phones everywhere and “Wartel” everywhere, and every home had a fixed “land line” Well yesterday I spent pretty much the whole day searching for a land line or wartel where I could make the free “reverse charge call” Not a phone to be found and no hotel wanted to let me pay to use their phone for the reverse charge call, frustrating and by this stage getting very depressing..
So I go back on the CBA website and see they have a FB and Insta account so I tried the FaceBook site first. Less than 2 mins later I found a Messenger Service emergency link where I could actually get in contact with a human and explain what had and what was happening. Their operators were right on the ball and immediately called my mobile number to help me. After answering all the questions to prove who I was they put me in direct contact with the credit card people and bam 5 mins later my card was un blocked. So I really am stoked that I have stayed with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia all the years since I was in Primary school. My hats off to their emergency team, 110% pure customer service.
This is the second time in just over 25yrs that I have had a card “drama” back in the 90’s I lost a MasterCard and the CBA had a replacement card delivered within 36hrs. The poor courier had been searching for my out of the way address for 12hrs prior to finding me and handing me the card in person.
So for any new travellers make sure you get to know your bank and how to make that emergency contact for help, you never know. It could happen to anyone right.
Like I said it’s day to day living here in Bali, one day it’s a World of depression and the next you have athe smile back on your face and a spring in your step, one day at a time.
