BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
10th – 15th May 2021
Hello Bali people and thanks for stopping by the baliwaves (the original Bali surf report website since 1999, for surfers by surfers)
I don’t know if most of you are still aware that Bali is really still hurting, most of Bali anyway. I guess you could say there are a couple of area’s around Canggu and down on the bukit that are cashing in from the European explosion. My family and I have a small guest house that mostly serves to Aussies and there hasn’t been any real Aussie visitors here on holiday since last Jan 2020. We are not alone of course, especially if any of you have watched the last video clip I posted with footage from Kuta and Legian.
If you know people here in Bali please drop them a line and check to see if they are ok. There are a lot of desperation and depression happening around the island. Likewise if any of our friends can spare a dollar or two to help my Family it would be greatly appreciated, thanks (please hit this link to help out). Most of Bali is hanging out for our Australian brothers and sisters to return and Make Bali Great Again.
Ok so as your probably aware there has been a bit of a flat spell with small waves the best on offer at most locations and some just straight out flat. But pretty well as predicted this morning we started to see a nice new swell hitting the Southern end of the island, coming out of the SSW quadrant of the Indian Ocean. So Ray and I were down there with fully charged cameras and eager to shoot some barrels to showcase here on your baliwaves.
We turned up around mid tide, on the run in. The ESE Trade wind was in place with gusts up to 12-15knot, straight off shore at Uluwatu from Temple’s down to the Racetrack. It was just starting to get a bit fat through the Racetrack section but still trying. While the Main Peak was coming on fast with the rising tide. For the first hour wave height was mostly hitting the 3-5ft mark but as the tide kept flowing in so did the swell. It wasn’t long before therewere wedgy triple head high plus waves on The Peak.
Crowd wise it was crazy with around 65 surfers spread around The Peak some getting pushed in. I’d say after the last few days of tiny waves down at Uluwatu a lot of the people in the water were caught out by the new swell. Plenty of broken leg ropes and a lot of pulling back. But lucky there were a few local Bali surfers on the job scoring some super long and deep tube rides. It’s been a long time since I shot 500 photos in a single session. BTW I could have loaded a couple of hundred photos but sorry it’s now gone past 3pm and I’m starting to feel my eye’s burning from the camera and now the PC LCD.
Temples was also peeling off some long rides, some for at least 200mtrs and only 15 surfers down there. Lots of broken leg ropes at Uluwatu today and I do have to say that the learner crew out in the water today were giving it a ballsy go. Uluwatu is a heavy shift wave with the Peak always shifting about once you turn your back on the wave and start paddling for it.
Driving home past Padang Padang and Impossibles there wasn’t a lot of swell bending in there. The baby reef wave in front of the bridge was maybe 2ft and Impossibes only looked head high at best. But down along the long sectiony wave towards Bingin there might have been a little better size.
Weather wise today it’s been mostly fine and sunny and a great start to our weekend. Right now at 3.15pm the temperature is still a warm 30 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is at 74%. Wind direction is still ESE with gusts up to 16knot+
Tomorrow’s Surf Forecast is predicted for wave height to still be solid on the better locations, slowly dropping off through out the day. We can also expect the Trade wind to be blowing hard again by mid morning.
Further out there is not a lot of swell moving up out of the S-SW but we should see another small bump in size around the 17th and then a bit of a break for awhile, but we will keep an eye on the Indian and keep you up to date.
We have loaded a new video clip yesterday featuring Uluwatu, Canggu and Keramas with the footage shot through early May. Nb. Ray shot a tonne of footage this morning but I’ll leave that to download another day.
