BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
8th – 9th May 2021
Hello Bali people and thanks for stopping by the baliwaves (the original Bali surf report website since 1999, for surfers by surfers)
I don’t know if most of you are still aware that Bali is really still hurting, most of Bali anyway. I guess you could say there are a couple of area’s around Canggu and down on the bukit that are cashing in from the European explosion. My family and I have a small guest house that mostly serves to Aussies and there hasn’t been any real Aussie visitors here on holiday since last Jan 2020. We are not alone of course, especially if any of you have watched the last video clip I posted with footage from Kuta and Legian.
If you know people here in Bali please drop them a line and check to see if they are ok. There are a lot of desperation and depression happening around the island. Likewise if any of our friends can spare a dollar or two to help my Family it would be greatly appreciated, thanks (please hit this link to help out). Most of Bali is hanging out for our Australian brothers and sisters to return and Make Bali Great Again.
Yesterday the 8th and we did start to see a small spike in wave height with the Outer Reefs of Tuban delivering some fun sized chest to over head high waves between Kuta Reef and Airport left. Light and variable wind early before ESE Trade kicked in late morning.
This morning the 9th and Ray and I thought we’d make a quick
photo / video mission over to the East Coast to catch Keramas before the wind kicked in. We had a smooth run on the East Coast Highway with a noticeable drop in traffic, until we hit Sanur. We made it to Keramas around 8.00am and as it shows in today’s photo gallery the waves were pumping through in the 3-5ft class and surfing conditions perfect.
Only 15 surfers in the water at first and I reckon there would not have been more than 20 at the peak of the crowd just after the morning high tide. Mostly local Keramas and Lebih surfers dominating the barrels and guests from the Padma Boys getting their share of the action.
There’s also a few photos of body boarder in today’s gallery, but no ordinary body boarder that’s for sure. Just about everyone on the East Coast knows Charlie, he’s been here since the 70’s I think. Charlie was one of the original Kuta Lines crew and is currently revamping the label. At 70yrs of age Charlie gets in the water most days.
We also have a good friend who is up the coast this morning and surfed Balian early this morning and sent us through a line up photo. Our man said there were some nice long fun waves in the well over head high range and clean surfing conditions without the crowd before the Trade wind kicked in.
Weather wise it was mostly overcast from the time we turned up with a few drops of wind blow rain started to blow in from the SSE around 10.00am. We held out until around 10.20pm when the wind increased and the waves turned ugly, just getting the camera gear stowed away before the rain well and truly started to fall. Right now at 2.10pm (Tuban) we are starting to see blue back in the sky for a nice sunny Sunday arvo. temperature wise the mercury is on 29 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is at 76%. Wind direction here is coming out of the ESE at 10-12knot.
The next tide today in Bali will be a 0.5mtr Low at 3.15pm. Coming up to a New Moon rising on the 11th of May.
Tomorrow’s Surf Forecast is predicted to jump a couple of feet or two but with the same 14 second period as today. Swell direction is still out of the SSW so the East Coast will see the most size. Wind wise it’s predicted to be gusty out of the ESE-SE but hopefully light and variable through the early morning.
Long Range Swell Forecast is saying that this current swell should peak tomorrow and then slowly back off through to the 12th. Then not far behind that we have another similar swell arriving on the 14th. There are more waves in transit behind this with the Indian Ocean coming to life.
On the Bali Corona Virus Scene, as you might have heard on the International news there has been a few tragic cases of corruption gone down in Indonesia. With a certain Dr and assistants re using nasal swabs at a Sumatran airport. Then the Jakarta Hotel quarantine scandals. Not a good look and almost inhuman acts during a World wide pandemic. Still no news or confirmations on Denpasar International airport re opening in June / July at this stage. New strains of the virus have been detected in Bali, along with a big national holiday and lots of big ceremonies coming, time to keep the head down and strictly follow the protocols. The good news, Bali is pushing ahead with vaccinating the general population, maybe when we have achieved that goal things will start turning more positive.
Ok friends thanks again for tuning in to the baliwaves. Make sure you keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram accounts for more news and up dates from your first choice surfing holiday destination of Bali.
