Hi folks and thank again for tuning into the baliwaves (Bali’s original surf and weather report website since 1999). The last week here in South Kuta / Tuban the weather has started to show some early signs for a possible early season shift in weather. But then I guess it all comes to our high levels of hope that has got us this far. I even managed a super fun surf out at Airport left last week. Clean off shore wind, chest to overhead high set waves and a crowd of 7 surfers. Can’t go wrong with that combo right. I even managed to get the refit and refurbish finished on my traditional fishing boat and back on it’s mooring ready to go.
There’s been a load of stuff happening over the last week for my family, friends and I so I’ll fill you in as we go. Like I mentioned the Outer Reefs of Tuban, Kuta Reef to Airport Right has been delivering some fun little waves of late. Light and variable clean conditions early before dedicating to the W-WNW was how it mostly went. But there were some real nice windows where if you were on the Ball, you could score un crowded perfect head high waves.
This morning the 13th and my early morning surf check on the Outer Reefs had the wind a light NNE with 1-3ft waves breaking between Kuta reef and Airport Left. The tide was on the running in. So, I thought I’d take a run up to Canggu to see how things were in the wave dept. I have been parking up at the Pererenan Temple my last few visits. Mostly because it’s a safer drive in with less tourists learning to ride scooters and because it was a much more pleasant drive with a nice and free parking area right on the beach in front of the river mouth right handers.
Alas, this morning there was a new gate installed and no car access. motorbikes were ok to enter though. So by the time I reversed back out of the narrow lane and made my way back to Echo beach the wind had shifted to the ESE and cross / on shore at Canggu. A couple of my local friends gave me the standard ” you should have been here a bit earlier; it was way better” Yeah yeah I know the story.
Even at Echo beach there has been sone big changes with the demolishing of the old original Balinese warungs, leveled and graded. That’s where I parked my old car. I was told that the now car park is soon to be developed as a 3 story super market. People have to eat I guess, although there are a couple of trendy super markets not that far away.
Anyway, as it shows in this latest photo gallery there were still a few waves, but to be honest it was mostly just close outs. Both on the river mouth and the Sandbar. Only maybe 10 surfers on the sandbar and maybe 115-20 tightly packed surfers on the river mouth right. I was set up in a central spot and it was great to get so many hellos and smiles from people passing by. Traffic levels in and out of the Gu were also good for a nice change
Weather wise it was cloudy and overcast the whole time I was on the scene. Just now at 4.10pm the sky has gone dark a and we had a few drops of rain with a very real chance of more heavy rain to follow tonight.
Tomorrow‘s Surf Forecast is saying to expect a slight drop in wave height. Fresh NE wind early before swinging more to ENE and then ESE throughout the day.
Long Range Surf Forecast is still not showing any real lines hitting Bali over the next week but hopefully a nice bump in size towards the middle / end of next week.
The next Moon Phase will be a Full Moon on the 15th of February
Bali Covid-19 situation seems to be getting a lot more new cases being reported. But from what I’ve seen personally my guess is that the real numbers might be 5-10 times higher. The Omicron seems to be a lot lighter than the original strains and might just bring on the end of the pandemic. But just to play it safe and by the book my wife and I are scheduled in for our 3rd shot or booster tomorrow might.
You may have also read my last post yesterday with the WSL scheduling a QT 1000 even for Kuta Beach next month. Maybe they have the intel with flights being able to enter directly out of Australia. Instead of direct flights only currently allowed via Singapore or Japan of all places. The WSL also has a CT event scheduled for G-Land this June so fingers crossed those in charge give the green light for direct flights from everywhere and a VOA for all. By the way I think there was only a hand full of us wearing a mask at Canggu today.
Ok sorry about the long report today, but I really have tried to summarize things a little bit to spare you my grammar and spelling.

Jim,
Jetstar are starting direct flights and are taking bookings from the 18th of March..
Of course the situation is still pretty fluid so don’t hold your breath..
I also have intel that the quarantine may be cut to 2 nights for triple vaxxed.
See you in June.
Doc
That’s great news and keeps our “hope” levels at maximum Doc. It all depends on wether direct flights from Australia are approved (Jet Star have been selling flights to Bali since this time last year) the lower or zero quarantine period. But the killer I think is the on-line visa at 300 dollars will still put off a lot of people especially our bread and butter surfers from WA, if WA ever opens. I have the boat ready for more fishing this year. Hopefully by June we will see holidaying in earnest, fingers crossed
